The STOP-IT project

The European research project STOP-IT is part of the ICT4Water cluster and focuses on the strategic, tactical and operational protection of critical water infrastructures against physical and cyber threats.

Water infrastructures are essential for human society, life and health. They can be endangered by physical or cyber threats with severe societal consequences. To protect them, the H2020 funded STOP-IT project brings together a strong team of 23 partners, including water utilities, industrial technology developers, high tech small and medium-sized enterprises and top research & development providers from all across Europe and Israel.

Together the consortium identifies current and future risks and co-develops an all-hazards risk management framework for the physical and cyber protection of critical water infrastructures. Prevention, detection, response and mitigation of relevant risks at strategic, tactical and operational levels of planning are taken into account to generate modular solutions (technologies, tools and guidelines) that will be embedded into an integrated, scalable, adaptable and modular software platform at the end of the project in 2021.

One of the latest project results is the Public Warning Notification System, short PWNS. The tool has two main functionalities, incident detection and reporting and user/citizen alerting. Other tools under development are the strategic and tactical risk assessment and treatment framework, a jamming detection system, a toolbox for IT and SCADA security, a physical threats toolbox, a cyber threat sharing system and many more.
